What is the most beautiful-looking horror movie of all time?
And Argento is a gimme, so try to come up with something else.
For me, it's "Don't Look Now." The location in which the story takes place is in itself creepy, and the fact that you see little splashes of red here and there is a nice touch. Also, that damn dwarf in the end is horrific.

Tue, April 12, 2005 - 10:12 PM"Don't Look Now" looks great; story is in Venice; another one I missed but must see. Glad I joined this tribe.

I'll come up with an entry of my own shortly. -

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Tue, April 12, 2005 - 11:22 PMOne of the mostbeautiful horro movies I ever sawwas the 1979 re-make of "Nosferatu" by Werner Herzog, starring Klaus Kinksi. It's not "lush," but the composition of the scenes and the cinematography are just stunning.

I'll have to check it out. -

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Wed, April 13, 2005 - 1:17 PMMight be considered marginally horror, but what the hell...
'The Innocents' & 'Night of the Hunter', both making fine use of wonderfully stark B&W photography.
I gotta agree with Kinski's 'Nosferatu', that is just one beautiful film to watch. -
-
Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Wed, April 13, 2005 - 3:45 PMA film I saw at Sundance/04 called, "One Point 0" with Jeremy Sisto and Lance Henriksen. Really gorgeously shot. I believe it's called something else now on DVD.

Wed, April 13, 2005 - 5:33 PMSure did! Disney Pics, as a matter of fact. Don't let the Disney label chase you off. The movie really captures that Bradbury Autumn in a small town feel. The movie has atmosphere. -

Wed, April 13, 2005 - 7:53 PMYep, I read the short story. Daphne Du Marier is a great writer. She also wrote the Birds AND Rebecca.

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Wed, April 13, 2005 - 4:33 PMI agree that Herzog's Nosferatu is visually stunning. Another to consider is Neil Jordan's "The Company Of Wolves", which contains some beautiful imagery. I must also toss in "Hellraiser" if only for the elaborate scarification of the cenobites. There's a horrifying beauty to that, I think. -

Mon, June 6, 2005 - 7:03 PMLost Highway
Cat People (though I imagine it will suffer from 80s-isms)
The Hunger (seconded!) -

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 2:24 PMok, this may not qualify as to what this topic thread is about, but...
when i recently saw 'night of the living dead' completely restored picture on dvd (after decades of watching the crappy print that had been passed on through all the vhs copies), i would say that was truly a beautiful thing to see.

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 2:36 PMI always come back to "The Company of Wolves" -- I haven't seen it in years, but I remember the movie had a very dreamlike quality to it, vivid colors, but kind of gauzy.

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 8:32 PM"Repulsion" is irresistable to look at, as is "Night Tide" "Eyes Without A Face" and anything by Jean Rollin. Also a little known 50s film called "I Bury The Living." Albert Band, the director, really let his background as a painter show on that one.
The 1920s art deco look of "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" is amazing.

Honorable mention:

Sleepy Hollow -

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Wed, July 20, 2005 - 10:09 AMMy all-time favorites have always been Nosferatu, The Birds, The Exorcist, The Omen series and The Hunger.
From Hell (surprised that nobody has mentioned that one yet) and Sleepy Hollow were both beautiful films, but the Hughes brothers and Tim Burton have fat budgets so they better look good.

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 11:26 AMI'm going to have to go with "The Devil's Backbone", directed by Guillermo Del Toro, followed closely by his other movie "Chronos".
After that, on my list it's:
Suspiria (yeah, Argento is a gimme)
Alien
The aforementioned version of Nosferatu
This is a great topic, thanks for putting it up! -
-
Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 3:34 PMThe three most beautiful "horror" (suspense, comedy, whatever you would call it....) that come to mind, due to whole content and cinematography would have to be:
Deathwatch with Ruaidhri Conroy and Jamie Bell
The Machinist with Christian Bale and Jennifer jason Leigh
Last but not least Dagon with Ezra Godden

Wed, August 3, 2005 - 10:41 AMi really loved the movie house of a thousand corpses
they way it was filmed i could only see red for a half and hour after the movie was over
as well the ending was quite superb
the devils rejects was done quite well too with good role reversal of slasher vs victim
but for me i love the sleepaway camp series
and pinhead

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Tue, August 30, 2005 - 10:23 AMTo avoid threading upon already suggested titles, I'll go with a dark horse...
Rollin's Les Raisins de la Mort (The Grapes of Death) which was shot in the gorgeous countryside of Southern France.
Rollin could really shoot some memorable scenes when he wasn't busy jacking off to Brigitte Lahaie. -
-
Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Sun, December 11, 2005 - 3:40 PMI was thinking Argento...the set design and use of color by the Italians is wonderful.
But I have to agree with Ebooty....ALIEN....it still floors me today...no other movie is/was/ever been as truly alien.
I hate but enjoy the other Alien movies...but it bother's me that they try to explain the how's and why's of the Alien Mythos...I like that it's not explained in the first film.
Lovecratian Horror in space.... -

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Mon, December 19, 2005 - 8:16 PMOk, not exactly a horror, but I noticed Cronenberg missing so let me throw outa recent creepy movie I just loved:
-Spider
But for all-times-sake, I find The Exorcist beautiful, and of course horrific.
PS- And an amen to Chronos, Dagon, and Brotherhood of the Wolf. -
-
Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Wed, January 25, 2006 - 1:13 PMOh yes! Spider is beautiful. I think Cronenberg makes beautiful movies.
Beautiful is in eye of the beholder , so Videodrome is gorgeous...those throbbing televisions, fleshy cables, and lots of tv static..wierd and beautiful. -

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie

"It puts the lotion in the basket!" -

Re: Most Beautiful Horror Movie
Sat, March 11, 2006 - 12:37 PMI remember, when I was growing up, I would go to the local movie rental place and see "the Silence of the Lambs" VHS on the shelf and it would give me chills. Something about that picture of Jodie Foster with the death's head moth on her mouth...

03. Silent hill (the atmos is supreme)
04. Alien (but only the first one)
05. Shadow of a vampire (Willem Dafoe's uber performance make's it such a great movie)
06. Nosferatu (1922 - respect)
07. Hellraiser (1,2,3,4 - well...either you like it or not but the idea behind the movie is original - only flesh and pain :)
08. Nightbreed
09. Dawn of the dead (both old and new one)
