For me, it's "Don't Look Now." The location in which the story takes place is in itself creepy, and the fact that you see little splashes of red here and there is a nice touch. Also, that damn dwarf in the end is horrific.

It gives me immense pleasure to announce the publication of my urban fantasy novel, BLACK MAGIC WOMAN.

It’s in most bookstores, and available online from Amazon and other dealers.

Here are 13 things you didn’t know about BLACK MAGIC WOMAN -- both the plot and the book itself.

1. The hero (well, one of them), Quincey Morris, is the great-great-grandson of the
Texan who died at the end of the original DRACULA. Contending with
supernatural evil has become something of a Morris family tradition.

2. The book was released in the UK and Australia on January 8th. The North
American release date was pushed back to January 29th because of a problem at
the North American printer.

3. African “muti” magic sometimes involves the use of human organs – which must be “harvested” while the victim is still alive.

4. "White" witch Libby Chastain, Quincey's partner in the investigation, is
bisexual, and a devout practitioner of what she calls "serial monogamy."

5. Jim Butcher, author of the "Dresden Files" novels, was kind enough to read
the manuscript pre-publication. As quoted on the book's cover, he calls BLACK
MAGIC WOMAN "the best manuscript I've ever been asked to read."

6. Quincey Morris is terrified of snakes, having almost died from
snakebite as a young boy. If only he knew….

7. Simon R. Green, author of the John Taylor 'Nightside" novels, was sent an
advance reading copy of BLACK MAGIC WOMAN and said, "This is a novel that's packed with story and engaging characters, and I can't wait to read the next one."

8. "White" magic cannot be used to do harm to somebody -- which doesn't mean
that you can't use it sometimes to kick somebody’s ass, as Libby Chastain knows full well.

9. Waterstones, the largest UK bookstore chain, has designated BLACK MAGIC
WOMAN as its featured SF/Fantasy title of the month. It's got its own display
in each of their 300-some stores. And if that ain’t freakin’ awesome, I don’t know what is.

10. It’s possible to drive off a bunch of zombies without having to “kill” them. All you need is the right magic – and a skilled magician to use it.

11. The South African national police really does have an Occult Crimes
Investigation Unit, although my character, Garth Van Dreenan, is not based on any
real person.

12. Vampires really do hate sunlight. A lot.

13. When you make a deal with the devil, the notes come due in brimstone.

Thanks for indulging me, everybody. I hope I've piqued your interest and that
you'll take a look at my novel. I'm kinda proud of it.

Hate to be the one to break the news, but the live version of TEXAS CHAINSAW at Cellspace was a total waste of time and money.

I expected low production values, it is supposed to be campy after all.
BUT....there were some major problems (which is why literally HALF (maybe more) of the audience left during intermission)

#1 unless you are seated in the first row you miss 3/4 of the action since they A.) didn't bother to build a stage and B.) don't bother to try and keep the action high enough that even 1/2 the audience can see it.

#2 They dont use a sound system, so you cant heard most of the dialouge.

On top of the "missing most of the play" issues for the majority of the audience, it ran waaay to long.
The "script" was a joke (totally unfocused, not funny, basically boring)
and they focused almost all of the blood spray on the front 1/4 of the audience (the rest of you get to watch the people in front have all the fun).

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!
You don't have to take my word for it...ask someone you know who attended one of the earlier performances what they thought. Odds are good that they were in the 1/2 of the audience that left after intermission (I actually stayed to try and give it a chance and ended up just wasting more of my time)

I went to see EVIL DEAD LIVE and it was great...
BUT what's missing now basically is that the group of people now making up the cast seem to have decided that what is important is for THEM to have a good time and that's where their focus is, not on playing to the audience.
It's masturbatory theatre. "Ha ha isn't this fun!"
That'd be okay if the performance was free or $5...but at $20 a ticket, it's not acceptable.

I watched this tonight. I can't help but think I'd rather have read it. It had certain Lovecraftian elements that I thnk would have translated better (been creepier) in a book format. The most obvious tie-ins- Location: Arkham, Lovecraft's most famous couplet found in a tomb, the fungal slug-monster, and the ultimate triumph of the monstrous darkness from the deep. ;-)

Of course, it has the very important message that you can never, ever have enough salt when dealing with necrotic monsters empowered by slug-like well-dwelling puke monsters.

Not a bad film, despite reviews... the effects were good... It reminded me a bit of an old cult classic called "The Stuff."

But I still would rather have read it than watched it. Anyone know if it *is* based on a novel/short story?

One of my other tribes alerted me to the fact that this fabulous horror star is havin' a lil ol' birthday today...
Drink a toast of green goo tonight for Mr. Combs!

Lil Bio-
A horror film leading actor, Jeffrey Combs is probably best known for protraying Herbert West in the cult horror film Re-Animator (1985). Re-Animator was based on H.P. Lovecraft's famous novel brought together by Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna, the producer and financier of the film. Combs stayed in the realm of cult films with both Gordon and Yuzna to return when making From Beyond (1986), and Bride of Re-Animator (1990) also from Lovecraft novels. He has also been in some supporting roles in The Pit and the Pendulum (1990) (V), the strange FBI Agent with Michael J. Fox in The Frighteners (1996/I) , I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) and the remake of the William Castle thriller, House on Haunted Hill (1999).

Trivia
Played five different clones of the same character (Weyoun) on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993); he also played two other roles on the show. Also played two roles (so far) on "Enterprise" (2001), an Andorian and a Ferengi.

Graduated from Lompoc High School in 1972 [1972]

Has starred in 5 movies based on H.P. Lovecraft stories.

Auditioned for the role of Commander Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987). Although he didn't get the part, Jonathan Frakes, who did get the part, remembered Combs when directing an episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993) and cast him in a guest role in that episode. The producers liked his performance so much he was later cast in two different recurring roles on the show.

Named "the first Lovecraftian actor" by fans of writer H.P. Lovecraft, for his frequent appearances in movies based on Lovecraft's writings (including a portrayal of Lovecraft himself, in Necronomicon (1994)) and also for his involvement in other "HPL projects".

Taboo Question Alert: What are the scariest movies ever?

OK, I realize that watching a horror film repeatedly can desensitize a viewer to its true scare value, but I think if you can remember back to the first time you saw them, you can say what stands as the scariest movies you've ever seen...

Seems this is virtually a tabboo subject for “serious” horror fans, which is exactly why I wanted to ask it. You just don't often find us copping to what movies are really scary, at least not on message boards anyhow. So, I'll give it a try, first. Let the healing begin

1. The Exorcist- of course, this seems to wind up high on lotsa lists, though I wonder if having a Catholic upbringing (which I sorta had, for a few years anyway) is prerequisite for finding this frightening. Anyway, I just always found the performances and makeup/special fx credible and horrific enough to hit a nerve. On repeated watchings.

2-4 (no particular order)

*Nightmare on Elm Street- I remember this looking and feeling just like a true nightmare, and Freddy more than dominated that realm with authority.

*Candyman- I think I just never knew what to expect in this movie, so that kept me scared.

*Evil Dead- the first one's grainy quality made it seem like a personal document. Maybe I'm just afraid of demons.

5.) The Ring/ Texas Chainsaw Massacre (tie) I guess this shows the conflict between my old and new school allegiances. I wouldn’t say these movies are still scary for me today, but they were once anyhow...

Please help me out guys, I know I've seen scarier films than #s 2 through 5...

Most people have probably seen the two loose adaptations of Matheson's "I am Legend" story, Omega Man with Charelton Heston and Vincent Price's The Last Man on Earth.

Now apparently they're making a more faithful adaptation of Matheson's story...

_________

Lawrence Takes On Legend
Warner Brothers has set Francis Lawrence (Constantine) to direct I Am Legend, fast-tracking the long-gestating adaptation of the Richard Matheson SF novel, Variety reported. David Heyman, Akiva Goldsman, Neal Moritz and Erwin Stoff are producing. Mark Protosevich wrote the script.

Lawrence takes on one of the more ambitious films in arner's
repertoire, the trade paper reported. Legend is a big SF project that has been at the studio for nearly a decade. At one time, it had Ridley Scott and Arnold Schwarzenegger attached, and another incarnation had Michael Bay and Will Smith set.

Set in Los Angeles after a biological war, the film centers on the sole healthy survivor, a man who finds himself in a battle against nocturnal mutants. The script will undergo a rewrite under the supervision of Lawrence and the producers, who eye a 2006 start date.

_______

I'm kind of looking forward to this "remake," but at the same time I think Hollywood's current remake frenzy is depressing. I wish they'd get a new idea and run with it instead of running old ideas into the ground. That said, I love Vincent Price's version of the story more than Heston's, but I'd buy a DVD collection that featured all three, just for the sake of having a complete collection.

I really do wish that when they did make a remake of some earlier movie, that they would come out with a collection featuring all the versions, instead of casting the older one aside.

Much better than Deader (#7) IMO, though a bit slow I thought and not as good as #6. Maybe it's just that it was released on September 6th but since I mail-ordered it, I only received it on Saturday (even though I could have bought one where I work, I just would have had to pay more.

Most of the acting was substandard. The plot was supposed to be based on a Hellraiser RPG, but beyond the characters' mentioning the supposed game, no one was ever seen to play it. I'm left to wonder whether they just didn't put that much effort into the development of the movie, or if Dimension films were afraid some folk would take to playing it...

I liked the double twist ending though which kind of brought the whole series of movies full circle. I don't want to say too much and ruin it for others, but the ending of this final movie does set it up for a new line of movies if Clive Barker succeeds in buying back the Hellraiser franchise.

Anyway, I'm kind of left with mixed feelings on this last movie. I guess like any fan of a franchised movie, I have my own ideas on how it could have been better and I'm frustrated that the finale wasn't better. But comparatively speaking, it wasn't the worst Hellraiser movie I've ever seen.

The KGB did something similar recently in the Ukraine by poisoning a politician with dioxin which disfigured his face but he survived and won. But they wanted him dead. So?

After Lake took a cyanide pill rather than be captured the police unearthed a bunch of snuff films at his hideaway. One was called M-ladies and is supposed to have various murders on it. It was entered into evidence against Charles Ng, who was convicted and now sits on California's death-row.

I know that there have been other killers who have convicted themselves with video-tape, my question is, I wonder if there are any corrupt people at Quantico that would dupe a tape for the right price? That is undoubtedly where these videos are studied and held. (Behariorial Sciences Unit)

This looks interesting... seems like a cross between Demons, From Beyond, and Evil Dead.

*********

Filmmaker Ted (THE DEADLY SPAWN) Bohus gave Fango an update on HELL
ON EARTH, his currently rolling supernatural horror/comedy that we first
told you about here, including a more detailed story synopsis: “Sixteen-year-old Bobby walks with the help of metal leg braces and lives with his nasty parents Ernie and Lucy and repulsive sister Peggy.

He plays with ‘imaginary friends’ provided by the mysterious and ancient ‘Apocryphal Book of Tarkuhm’ provided by his eccentric and somewhat crazy Aunt Sadie. What he doesn’t know is that the monsters and demons are only biding their time until the planets are aligned, and they can get him to read the passage freeing their master from the “hell” of another universe.

“As this process begins, more and more bizarre creatures breach the portal of this world and magically seal everyone in the house, including Bobby, his parents, Peggy, her partying friends and the mysterious Aunt Sadie. Things get nasty as one by one, the inhabitants of the house fall prey to the ever-increasing horde of pustular monstrosities. Who will survive? Who will discover the way to destroy these strange creatures and save the Earth?”

The cast includes Brett (FAIRVIEW FALLS) Fallon as Bobby, Kristin Woodburn as Peggy, Terry Shane as Ernie, Teresa Vicario as Lucy, Pat Ceasar as Aunt Sadie, Peter (CEMETERY GATES) Stickles as Chris, Emily Alpren as Ginger, Don Money as Norman, Aimee Hofmann as Lisa, Mary Corinne Miller as Janet and. “Teri Shields [pictured]—Brooke’s mom—has agreed to be an executive producer on the film,” Bohus reveals, “and THE DEADLY SPAWN’s executive producer Ron Giannotto and editor Marc Harwood are also on board.

“I wrote this film in the ’80s and it started out as a slapstick comedy,” Bohus continues. “When a few of the comedy/horror films tanked at the box office, I shelved the project, but I still liked the idea of putting an EVIL DEAD-type film right in the middle of town. Since everyone is magically sealed in the house, you don’t need to stage it in an isolated setting. From outside, the house looks normal, but inside, all hell is breaking loose!”

HELL ON EARTH is a production of Horror Biz Films, and Bohus says, “Our line producer, Ken Greenblatt, got back from the Cannes festival and said this type of film is doing very well. The studios are realizing that low-budget films have a vast following. Pay a little money for the film and put a lot into advertising, and you just might hit paydirt. We hope this film might fit into that sort of scenario. Dave Baumuller has been my right hand, and we have a topnotch crew. I’ve met a bunch of talented special effects artists at conventions, and now they are all working on some part of the film.” And as he told us previously, “We’d like our next film to possibly be DEADLY SPAWN 2.” —Michael Gingold

The color and cinematography remind me of the high grade horrors of the seventies. I mean to say, the flick keeps an on screen atmosphere akin to Hell House. The movie is beautiful to look at. The pacing and plot are slow by the fast food gottahavitnow yank standards, but the afore mentioned color and cinematography, kept me, at least, mesmerized until the good stuff started hapening. If I got any beef at all with this baby, it's that it looks to be the product of asian research and development. I mean there's the obligatory creepy crawly woman scene that has been made famous in The Ring-Ringu, and The asian&yank Grudge flicks. There's also a scene that reminds one of that burlap sack moment from Audition. There are a few other tried and true scares that were proven successful in past asian horror hits, but I wont kill the thrill.

The DVD is worth veiwing. Soon as I let it settle in, I believe I'll give it another go.

Original, gory, creepy-atmospheric, and above all- Effective. I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I'll just recommend all you sickos check it out. Oh yeah, the END credits roll to a pretty cool metal number by a band called Scratching Post.

It certainly keeps you guessing as to whether the little girl is delusional or actually has a psycho "friend" right up until the end. I didn't like the end, but that was the only thing marring the movie for me. I'd definitely recommend it.

Well, I got the Deader dvd in the mail the other day and watched it yesterday... I have to say, six was better. And seven could have been better if it had used more foreshadowing as six did. The potential was there, and some of the scenes they left out would have improved it. Don't get me wrong, it was certainly better than five. All the Hellraiser movies are better than five, which was basically a cop story in hell. But six didn't add anything new to the story, aside from giving the latest Merchant incarnation an interesting ability.

They also had a "gag reel" which wasn't very big, but I got a kick out of seeing ol' Pinny flub his lines and start laughing. Nothing like a seeing a man with pins in his head start chortling non-fiendishly to make you crackup.

For fans of the late sci-fi show Sliders, the main character is Kari, the woman who played Maggie. I found her character in Hellraiser to be very Maggie-ish in that both are pretty hardboiled personalities. It does make me wonder about her range as an actress though. :/

I haven't watched all the commentary yet, but it was a good effort. I was already prepared to be disappointed... being a fan is always good preparation for disappointment. I'm hoping 8 is better in September, and I'm looking forward to hearing more in the tv show they were discussing.

WORLD HORROR CONVENTION 2006 COMES TO SAN FRANCISCO: World Horror Convention 2006, a professional convention for writers, artists, publishers and booksellers focusing on horror and dark fantasy, comes to the Holiday Inn San Francisco-Golden Gateway May 11-14, 2006. Guests of Honor include author Peter Straub (Toastmaster; www.peterstraub.net), artist Brom (www.bromart.com), publishers John Pelan (www.darksidepress.com) and Hiroki Sakai (www.vertical-inc.com), and authors Kim Newman (www.johnnyalucard.com), Koji Suzuki (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0840626/) and Clive Barker (www.clivebarker.com).

San Francisco has a colorful past, growing from a small village to a major city nearly overnight as a result of the 1849 Gold Rush. The writers of the "beat" generation, the hippies of the Summer of Love in the late 1960's and the large gay/lesbian population have all contributed to making San Francisco the fascinating place it is today. The City by the Bay was home to literary legends such as Ambrose Bierce and Fritz Leiber, and the Bay Area hosts horror personalities in both the literary world and the world of cinema. Tourist information on www.whc2006.org includes ghost tours, haunted hotels, film locations, and more.

Attending Memberships are on sale through May 31, 2005 for just $100 for the weekend. Beginning June 1, 2005, Attending Memberships will be $110, and prices will go up incrementally to $140 at the door. Memberships may be purchased online or by mail – see www.whc2006.org for more details.

For more than ten years, the World Horror Society has overseen the World Horror Convention to provide an event that is conducive to education, networking and conducting business for horror professionals and enthusiasts. In celebration of professional achievement, WHC presents the Horror Grandmaster Award, honoring individuals who have contributed greatly to the horror field. Honorees are nominated and selected by past and present Members of WHC, and the 2006 Horror Grandmaster Award will be presented in a special ceremony at WHC 2006. Full details on past winners of the Grandmaster award may be found at www.worldhorrorsociety.org.

This year’s co-chairs are Darren Mckeeman of Gothic.net, one of the foremost sites for online horror fiction and news; Chad Savage of SinisterVisions.com, award-winning horror artist and web designer; and Jeremy Lassen of Night Shade Books (www.nightshadebooks.com), award-winning publisher of quality books from a broad spectrum of genres. Mckeeman, Savage, and Lassen bring a wide range of professional skills and experience to WHC 2006, and plan to make this year’s event a convention to remember.

WHC offers a juried Art Show featuring work of general interest to the horror and dark fantasy community. Work from both professional and amateur artists will be featured, and WHC 2006 will host a silent auction and print sales for participating artists. Full information on submitting work to the jury process may be found at www.whc2006.org. Artists need only apply to the jury once; acceptance by the jury allows an artist to exhibit at any future WHC.

WHC 2006 welcomes advertisers and sponsors from San Francisco and the world. Please see our Advertising section on www.whc2006.org for full information, or to contact the committee with your questions. We are compiling a Horror Tourist Guide to include in member packets; please contact us with information to include.

WHC2006.org offers up-to-the-minute information about WHC 2006, as well as forums and email discussion lists for your questions and comments. The complete committee list may be found there, including photos, bios, and contact information. Our first Progress Report will be mailed soon, and will include ballots for the 2006 Horror Grandmaster Award. Nominations and voting are open to Members of this and past World Horror Conventions; please purchase your membership soon if you would like to participate in the voting.

It starts off almost like its a cartoon with the sound effects and then evolves into something truely apocolyptic and horrifying. I really really liked this film alot and reccomend it to any horror fan as long as you don't need things spelled out for you or your not one of those well that couldn't happen types cuz this is WIERD and very strange and alot of fun but not exactly rooted in reality.
I hear people complain alot about some of the japan horror not making sense but when you focus on that you miss the most important part about japanese horrror which is mood and atmosphere and they find and so do i that what does not make sense is usually more horrifying that what does. Ok nough of tha from me go rent the damn dvd hehe.

The acting is very good, the camera angles chilling and all in all, it is quite a compelling flick.

I had to laugh my ass off, rewind, and start recording it.

So the intro was kinda neat, nifty visuals, decent music (sounded like prodigy)

Though, the more i started to watch the credits it was the film based off of that sega game, you know the pretty weird ass, wannabe resident evil zombie game?

The film was wreched, i couldnt even watch all of it... It was like a bad porn with acouple of actually decent actors just with absolutely nothing going on... So, im going to watch the rest of it later...

at what point in your life did you become a horror fan and what precipitated it?

at age 12, i used to watch all the B horror flicks and Hammer films when they were aired on Saturday afternoon TV...then one day they started a Hitchcock cycle and aired The Birds.
up to this time, i would tend to watch anything, albeit with my eyes covered. but when they showed the scene in the house where they discover the man sitting in the corner with his eyes pecked out in close up, the defining moment came - instead of covering my eyes, i peered at the screen in fascination and wondered, "How did they do that?"...from then on i could (and still can) watch anything and everything, read anything and everything horror i can get my hands on.

In the 60's in San Franciso there was a group led by Robert DeGrimston, called the Church of The Final Judgement that was born out of a Scientology group there. Everything about Manson's dogma and rap was culled from the writings of this group who put-out four issues of a magazine with the titles Love, War, Fear and Hate.

After Manson's group did their shenanigans in L.A., C.O.F.J. moved to Mexico and then to New York City where they gathered more followers. It is alleged that David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam killer, was a member and was more ritual-killing than the work of a nut. It is also alleged that the famous and now deceased photographer Robert Mapelthorpe filmed at least one of the murders.

More on all this and how this group spun-off into other groups is set-forth in a very compelling arguement in a book called Ultimate Evil. Pick it up if you can find a copy.
But I'd like to know what the scariest book you've ever read is. For me, I think it would have to be The Amityville Horror. The movie was a joke, but the book freaked me out! Thinking about seeing those glowing red pig eyes kept me from looking out windows at nite. Reading about the hooded figure at the top of the stairs was terrifying. MY bedroom was at the top of the stairs, and for many nites afterward I was too scared to go to the restroom. I think I read this book when I was about 15. What's worse, is that a neighbourhood kid once pointed out that the house I grew up in looked a little like the AH house. But by that age I was too old to sleep with my mommy when I was frightened.
Without doubt, the best US horror film I've seen in I don't know how long--even if it was made by a pair of Aussies.

Seeing it was like I felt when I saw TEXAS CHAINSAW, except this is fater, more relentless, more, um, artful.
